![]() Barbara Rosene, is a passionate interpreter of American popular music of the 20s, 30s and 40s. Robert L. Daniels of Variety has described her with these words;"Her voice reflects a winsome page from the past. Often it coos with a perky and insinuating sexy edge." "poise, beauty and the voice of a lark, sensual, witty and a touch of class." Scott Yanow of The Los Angeles Jazz Times and All Music Guide on line has written: "Her beautiful voice perfectly fits the material as does her subtle improvising...Barbara Rosene really knows the meaning behind the lyrics and she sometimes brings out hidden beauty in even the most familiar songs." Currently, Barbara is the Special Guest Singing Artist with The Harry James Orchestra under the direction of renowned trumpeter Fred Radke. She has been touring the US performing the timeless music of the WWII girl vocalists. Pianist Judy Carmichael featured Barbara on her NPR Radio show Jazz Inspired. Other guests on Judy's show have included Robert Redford and director Roger Michell. Will Friedwald, author of Jazz Singing, has said, "No one evokes more vividly the music of the great singers of the 20s than Barbara Rosene." She has recorded four CDs on the Stomp Off label; Deep Night, Ev'rything's Made For Love, Moon Song, and It Was Only A Sun Shower. They are a tribute to the composers of the 20s and 30s and feature a peerless group of traditional jazz musicians including Jon-Erik Kellso and Conal Fowkes. Barbara has also recorded a collection of more well known tunes from the 30's and 40's on the Azica label entitled All My Life. She can also be heard on the Arbor's Record release Celebrating Bix, a tribute to Cornetist Bix Beiderbecke. She has had regular engagements with her own New Yorkers at The Essex House, The Tavern on The Green and recently The Iridium Jazz Club. In 2006 a Back Stage Bistro Award was awarded to Barbara for her Moon Song show at Danny's Skylight Room in New York. In his book, The Jazz Singers, jazz critic and historian Scott Yanow includes Barbara's work in it's guide to the 521 Great Jazz Singers. Because of. her knowledge of The Great American Songbook, the Tin Pan Alley composers, and her devotion to the early female vocalists Barbara has begun guest lecturing on these subjects, recently giving a performance/lecture at the New School in New York City. |
